SURFsara and UNESCO-IHE workshop: How water research benefits from HPC Cloud?

30 March 2015

On 5th and 6th March 2015, UNESCO-IHE hosted a workshop for research on water engineering and management using HPC systems. SURFsara, as the leading national e-infrastructure provider, delivered a hands-on course on their HPC Cloud and presented its benefits to the water world.

Since 2009, SURFsara offers the HPC Cloud to the Dutch academic community. It is an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) computing system, where the users can build their own clusters composed of virtual machines.

Improving the HPC Cloud disk with SSDs for local storage

9 februari 2015

SURFsara’s High-Performance Computing Cloud (HPC Cloud) is a virtual computing infrastructure, giving users full control over the operating system and software. Our users appreciate this flexibility, and we have seen a steady increase in the number of users. With the growing popularity, however, users are experiencing that the speed of reading and writing files (also called I/O) is slower than expected. Right now, we are testing SSDs to improve the I/O performance of our HPC Cloud, and it looks promising. In this article, I will discuss our first benchmarks and experiences with SSDs.
