Improving the HPC Cloud disk with SSDs for local storage

9 februari 2015

SURFsara’s High-Performance Computing Cloud (HPC Cloud) is a virtual computing infrastructure, giving users full control over the operating system and software. Our users appreciate this flexibility, and we have seen a steady increase in the number of users. With the growing popularity, however, users are experiencing that the speed of reading and writing files (also called I/O) is slower than expected. Right now, we are testing SSDs to improve the I/O performance of our HPC Cloud, and it looks promising. In this article, I will discuss our first benchmarks and experiences with SSDs.
